U.N. to debate ‘greenhouse effect’

NZPA-Reuter New York The United Nations General Assembly has agreed to consider the socalled “greenhouse effect” of fossil fuel emissions that have dramatically warmed the atmosphere and could raise sea levels. The question was recommended for the first time for inclusion in an agenda of 149 items for debate during the threemonth session due to end on December 20. An item on promoting peace, reconciliation and dialogue in the Korean

peninsula, jointly proposed by the two Korean States, was recommended for consideration by the General Assembly in plenary session. The item replaced one proposed by South Korea to mark its fortieth anniversary and a rival item by North Korea on the situation in the peninsula, both of which were withdrawn. A proposed item on East Timor, .the former Portuguese colony that is claimed by Indonesia, was taken off the agenda at the proposal of France

and deferred to 1989. The assembly’s steering committee made the recommendations, virtually certain to be agreed by the plenaiy body. A new item deals with emergency aid for Jamaica, which is still reeling from the devastating effects of Hurricane Gilbert. Another question raised for the first time was the dumping of nuclear and industrial wastes in Africa, which will come up under the umbrella of "general and complete disarmament.”
