Help for Bangladesh
PA Wellington The Government has approved relief assistance of $lOO,OOO for Bangladesh after the recent devastating floods, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Marshall, announced yesterday. More than 20 million people — almost a fifth of Bangladesh’s total population — were affected by the floods, which seriously damaged crops, property, roads and bridges. As the flood waters recede, diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases have broken out. At their peak, the waters rose higher than they did during last year’s flood, which at that time was the worst in Bangladesh in 70 years. Mr Marshall said an untied contribution of $25,000 had been made to the President’s Relief Fund to meet the most urgent needs.
