NZPA-AAP Melbourne The Mornington ownertrainer, Jim Marconi, achieved his burning ambition to win a Group One event with his top entire, Rancho Ruler, in the sAustl 80,000 Marlboro Cup (1400 m at Caulfield on Thursday.
The Rancher four yearold looked to have the odds stacked against him again as he was carrying 57kg and had drawn the outside barrier No. 16. However, Rancho Ruler began quickly and was soon a clear leader, allowing top jockey, Harry White, to cross to the rail then ease him. Cameronic (15-1), ridden by Pat Hyland, quickly moved up to lead outside Rancho Ruler but White made sure he kept the inside running and in
the straight the horse kicked well clear and went on to score by one and three quarter lengths from the former New Zealand galloper, My Arctic Wolf (8-1). The New Zealand four-year-old, Our Westminster (10-1), ran on strongly to • finish a length away in third place.
Rancho Ruler opened in the betting at 9-4, eased to 3-1 then was backed in to start a clear favourite at 5-2.
