Seeing red

Sir, —I agree with Leigh Joyce and P. M. Kerr-North (September 21) regarding the change of colour of telephone boxes; from bright red to that of a flat blue. When I initially discerned this change of colour I truly thought that it was the undercoat — that a nice glossy royal blue colour was to follow. I soon found that this was not to be. A dead, flat blue the phone boxes have remained. As dead and flat as the thinking of the Telecom executives methinks. What good did they think it would achieve? How much did this fruitless exercise cost? Then we find that telephone rentals are to increase. I am suspicious. Is it not time that egotistical executives started bringing prices down rather than incurring further expense in trying to justify their high salaries? — Yours, etc., DAVID H. TILLING. September 21, 1988.
