Parents produce education guide

PA Auckland Parents of children with special education needs have banded together to produce a guide to what parents can expect from the education system and how to get it. The guide, called “Parent Pack,” has been two years in the making. It was produced on the initiative of the special education division of the Education Department, which paid for 10,000 copies to be produced. In 1986, the latest year for which figures are available, more than 30,000 pupils with different disabilities were receiving special education. Colleen Brown, one of the parents who helped

prepare the pack, said it accurately reflected parent experience, gave advice and was a unique example of parent-profes-sional partnership. The parents who contributed towards the guide came from several different disability-support groups. The Coalition of Parent Groups for Special Education chairman, Mr Rod Wills, said that previously there had been nothing readily avilable to tell parents of children with disabilities what they were entitled to. “ ‘Parent Pack’ will act as a guide for them through a most complicated structure,” Mr Wills said.
