Promotion of city
Sir,—What do Acapulco, Banff, Nice, Pisa, San Francisco, Stratford-on-Avon, Vancouver, Venice and Christchurch have in common? Thanks to a recent enlightened, forward-looking decision by the Christchurch City Council, this could be a familiar question in the 19905. The appointment of a promotions director to provide a focus for promoting the city’s national and international image should do much to stem the tide of redundancies in Canterbury. Miss Gillian Wess faces the challenge of putting Christchurch on the international map. This could be the beginning of a new era' for Christchurch. Perhaps the first move in this change of direction should be a change of name — from Christchurch to Haymishville, or Haywess-on-Avon. If Miss Wess succeeds in promoting Christchurch from an insignificant speck on the New Zealand map to a familiar blob on the international map she is assured of a “gold” for cartography — with the “silver” going to Sir Hamish. — Yours, etc., J. K. MOIR.. September 20, 1988.
