Labour policies
Sir, —We have a Government of socialists-cum-capitalists. For themselves M.P.s achieved a 27</ 2 per cent wage rise, but for the current workforce they set a ceiling of around 3 per cent. They shut down hospitals when they continue to fund abortion clinics. Criminals, other than first offenders, obtain legal aid at enormous public expense (for second and more offences the offender should pay or do without). In this context it is also hypocritical that the Department of Justice should agree to mediate with incarcerated “gangs.” Such men convicted for brutal rape and horrendous crimes have abrogated their so-called “rights” by their type of offence. Rather than long terms, it would be better and cheaper for the taxpayer if shorter terms with “hard labour” were awarded (i.e., terms with no remission and 12 hours of hard work daily; no work, no food!). The detention for serious crime should be harsh enough to create a fear of reoffending. Softness has been tried and found wanting. — Yours, etc., F. W. HARDING. September 19, 1988.
