The day in Parliament
PA Wellington Parliament resumed under urgency at 9 a.m. yesterday, debate continuing on the committee stage of the Development Finance Corporation Amendment Bill No. 2. The bill passed the committee stage and began its third reading. The bill was passed through its third reading after a 43 to 28 division vote. Members then began debating the third reading of the Earthquake and War Damage Amendment Bill. After the bill passed its third reading Parliament adjourned until 2 p.m. On resumption, Ministers answered 16 questions. The Minister of Fisheries, Mr Moyle, then moved the first reading of the Maori Fisheries Bill. The bill was given a first reading after a division won by 41 votes to 27. It was referred to a special Parliamentary select committee comprising Dr B. C. Gregory (Lab., Nth Maori), Mr D. L. Kidd (Nat., Marlborough), Mr W. R. Peters (Nat., Tauranga), Mr K. Shirley (Lab., Tasman) and Dr W. D. Sutton (Lab., Hawke’s Bay). Mr Shirley then tabled the reports of the Primary Production Committee on the examination of the estimate of expenditure of the 1988-89 Vote: forestry and 1988-89 Vote: survey and land information. Debate then continued on the Appropriation Bill (No. 2). The House adjourned for dinner at 5.30 p.m. and resumed at 7.30 p.m. The Chairman of Committees, Mr J. J. Terris (Lab., Western Hutt) reported back on progress made and the House rose at 10.30 p.m.
