Rare Maori films will be shown

Rare films depicting Maori Life early this century are included in a collection of New Zealand Film Archive films to be screened in Christchurch from October 15 to 19.

The Film Archive has been invited by the Canterbury Maori Studies Association to prepare the special week-long season of rare films from its collection. The Film Archive director, Mr Jonathan Dennis, said the films

were “some of the most compelling, exciting and moving made in this country.” Nineteen films spanning more than 70 years will be shown. The season, at the Christchurch Youth Centre, will be the only showing of the “McDonald films.” The four films, made by James McDonald on expeditions for the Dominion Museum between 1919 and 1923, are the most extensive record of their kind of traditional

Maori life and activities from that time. Included in the season will be a showing of the classic New Zealand feature film, “Broken Barrier,” made in 1952 and recently restored by the Film Archive. The romance drama will show in Christchurch with a fragment from the classic feature, “The Romance of Hinemoa,” made in 1927, and film of the “Tangi and funeral of Te Rauparaha’s niece,” made in 1921.
