Otaki run stepping stone to Melbourne

Special correspondent Wellington The performance of Candide in the $15,000 Lion Brown Cup as she builds up for Melbourne will be among the focal points of the Otaki-Maori Racing Club’s meeting at Otaki tomorrow. Candide has had two runs so far this season. She was fourth of five when resuming at New Plymouth and then second behind Mighty Glenn at Hastings last week when again favourite. Candide could be the favourite tomorrow but her elevation to that role would be surprising as she is hardly a specialist at the distance even though one of her four wins have come at 1600 metres, the Wrightson 1000 Guineas at Riccarton last season. and she will have to run a top race to make sure of an Australian campaign. Sound Belt is the form runner in the field after a last-start success at Wanganui. There will be support as well for Etoile d’Or which is having her third start back, and from a good draw seems sure to make a big impression. Miss Woodleigh has to be considered. The trainer, Eddie Dickinson, won the Waverley Cup on Wednesday with Abit Matey and in her last two starts Miss Woodleigh has finished fourth, in the Tim Rogers, and sixth, in the Byerley at Hastings, both those good efforts against weight-for-age company.
