Horlicks has look of winner at Avondale

Special correspondent Auckland Horlicks has a further chance at the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting this evening, to show her readiness for an Australian campaign. The Matamata mare is within days of being flown to Melbourne where she will race against Bonecrusher, Poetic Prince, and the best gallopers Australia can muster, in the W. S. Cox Plate. Unraced as a two-year-old, Horlicks quickly gained attention as a three-year-old of high promise. This year she has surprised even the closest of her connections with her achievements. Her victory over Bonecrusher at weight-for-age in the TVNZ Stakes at Ellerslie capped a successful summer and autumn and the two good wins she has scored in as many starts since back from the winter suggests she is as good as ever. First-up she took a 1200 metres at Ellerslie, on August 13, and she was all gameness again winning her one race meanwhile, the weight-for-age Tim Rogers Stakes at Wanganui. Standing to Horlicks during a very wet spring has been her ability to cope with very soft and heavy ground just as well as she did with the firm tracks of the summer.

The going for tonight’s Allegra Park Stakes, a weight-for-age 1400 metres, will almost certainly be soft but nothing like as difficult as it was for Wanganui.

Whatever the condition it is difficult, indeed, to envisage Horlicks being beaten. Field Dancer is the only other in the seven-horse field of such class and he has not raced for some four and a half months. He was capable of a second though when he returned to racing in the spring of last season, beaten by Tipit by just half a length, in a 1200 metres at Avondale. He won his very next race, the weight-for-age Byerley Stakes, at Hastings a fortnight later. Field Dancer, now a six-year-old, showed his quality when winning a Group 1 double at Ellerslie in the autumn last year — the Bayleys Easter and TVNZ Stakes. Even if he did not do as well last season he finished on a high note, winning his last two races, a 1600 metres at Tauranga then a 2200 m at Ellerslie. Serestrina, which rated high among the three-year-old fillies last season, is an interesting runner. This will be her second race after a layoff, following a C 3 1200 metres at Hastings on September 10 in which she finished fifth of 10.

A Woodville gelding, King Aussie, seems the one to beat in the first leg of the T.A.B. double, race seven. The second leg, race eight, looks more open with Slice of Heaven, Kitere, Exclusive Wun and Star World among the acceptors in form.
