Wait A Moment hard to beat again

By

JEFF SCOTT

Few will be looking past last week’s decisive D.B. Superstar Championship winner, Wait A Moment, as the winner of the C 6 and faster Almac Potato Methven Cup at the Mount Harding course at Methven tomorrow.

His ability to begin smartly, slot into a handy spot, and unleash a powerful final sprint should prove again insurmountable to his rivals in the first leg of the Methven Trotting Club’s T.A.B. double. The solidly built Clever Innocence gelding should not have any problem with the grass surface, having been a convincing winner on grass at Rangiora in the autumn. If bad luck keeps the likely favourite out of the winner’s circle then Final Offer will be strongly fancied after his outstanding run to beat all but Imperial Time in a fast 4:6.47 over 3200 m at Addington last week. The Boyden Hanover gelding was gallant in defeat, being caught on the line, after dashing clear on the home turn. He too, is a previous winner on grass and has never raced better than he has of late. Starwin Boy is resuming but looked forward for this with a quick last 2400 m after a slow start at the trials nine days ago, while Shot is never far away and has appealing 3200 m credentials as the winner of the Gore and Wyndham Cups over this distance last term, as well as a success at Addington in 4:11.8 in March. Light Foyle is another with outstanding form over 3200 m, and is a fine grass

track exponent which staged a brilliant run to win in 4:14 over the extreme distance at Methven last December. He should be ready to show quick improvement after two outings in this campaign, while Jay Ardee is another suited by this type of race and could reach a place at useful odds. Charles Nero, like Wait A Moment, a promising four-year-old by the Nero stallion, Clever Innocence, could resume on a winning note in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Methven Hotel Pace. The winner of four of his 12 starts from Robert Dunn’s team last term including a win on grass at Rangiora, Charles Nero is making his debut from Jack Smolenski’s Weedons team tomorrow and has had two sound runs at the trials to fit him for this. Twilight Time is consistent and also has winning form on grass to his credit, while Donegal Castle is an interesting runner resuming and warrants respect after winning three of his seven starts Inst season. Von Luckner raced soundly when fifth in the Superstar Championship and should find this easier, while Noble Alm, Major Bromac and Graecol are other possibilities in an open line-up. 9 0 Fair Warning 9 K.
