Italy regains some face
NZPA-Reuter Seoul Three-times world champion, Italy, humbled by Zambia on Monday, regained some face with a 2-0 win over Iraq in the Olympic soccer tournament on Wednesday evening. The group B victory booked Italy a place in the quarterfinals where it will meet Sweden. The Swedes leapfrogged to the top of group A after recovering from a goal behind to
defeat West Germany 2-1. Zambia assured itself of a last-eight place by thrashing Guatemala 4-0. It will play West Germany on Sunday. Italy was thwarted several times in the first half by acrobatic saves from the Iraq goalkeeper, Ahmed Mohammed. But Ruggiero Rizzitelii eventually found a way through in the fifty-eighth minute and Massimo Mauro added a second goal five minutes later.
Sweden, weakened by its failure to get players released from European clubs, shocked West Germany with two goals in 12 minutes. Leif Engqvist and Peter Lonn were the marksmen in the seventy-third and eighty-fifth minutes. Fritz Walter opened the scoring for West Germany in the seventieth minute. Tunisia lost its slender chance of a quarter-final place by drawing 0-0 with China in group A. J •'/
