Cathedral Square
Sir, —The citizens of Christchurch have just got over the trauma of the tower project in Victoria Square when they are now faced with another project which could mean a loss of public open space. Apparently an application is before the City Council for a restaurant in Cathedral Square. I see nothing wrong with a restaurant having outside seating, such as one sees near the Stewart Fountain, but if the restaurant has to be built on what is now open space then this space is lost. Overseas, one sees many restaurants with outside seating and these appear to be quite acceptable. Are the citizens prepared to see Cathedral Square open space being handed over for a restaurant building to be erected?—Yours, etc., B. R. HANSEN. September 13, 1988.
