Commissioner to foster awareness

By

LES BLOXHAM,

travel editor

Fostering a greater awareness of New Zealand among east coast Americans will be one of the big challenges facing Christchurch’s Tourist and Publicity Department manager, Mr Jeff Tippen, when he takes up his new appointment as the department’s travel commissioner in New York in November.

Mr Tippen is looking forward to the challenge as he knows the United States well.

He was travel commissioner in San Francisco for three years before moving to his Christchurch post in 1986. Mr Tippen was born in Granity, north of Westport, and began his career with the Tourist and Publicity' Department in Christchurch in 1958. He worked in the head office in Wellington and was for a number of years based in Australia, including a

period as deputy travel commissioner in Melbourne. He will be one of the department’s three travel commissioners in the United States, his territory covering the full length of the eastern seaboard. Mr Tippen succeeds Mr Max Winchester who has been transferred to the department’s marketing division in Wellington.
