Oceanarium offer on tower
By
KAY FORRESTER
The developers of New Brighton’s oceanarium are happy to modify their design to provide space for a tower on the foreshore. Although Goston Property Services and Realty i Development Corporation are not prepared to build the tower as part of their development, they have told New Brighton people they are willing to modify their layout to provide a site for the tower next to the oceanarium. Mr Warren Goston, of Goston Property Services, has written to a Burwood resident and advocate of a tower for the foreshore, Mr Bert Skinner, offering to make available space for a tower. “He said the tower would obviously benefit his project and so he is prepared to alter his design just a little to provide space on the foreshore,” Mr Skinner said.
Several New Brighton groups will write to the Wellington developers in support of the lighthouse tower. A tower for New Brighton was first suggested during the Victoria Square tower debate. A Christchurch architect, Mr Peter Beaven, designed a concrete lighthouse tower for the foreshore. When Mr Beaven is in Wellington next week he hopes to talk to Mr Goston about his concept. Mr Beaven said yesterday that the New Brighton community supported the tower. He would be prepared to put an application to the Christchurch City Council to get the project moving “but the community itself will have to provide the finance. “I would make the application on behalf of the New Brighton community. We would have to find sponsors for the project.”
