Saveur’s sister in work

The Riccarton trainer, Michael Pitman, has a full-sister to the talented Saveur among the 16 two-year-olds he is developing for the new season.

The filly, by Savant from the Greek God mare Kind Thought, is not a precocious sort and is likely to be given time to develop before facing the starter.

The same applies to most of the youngsters in the stable but a Shy Rambler gelding from Grace And Favour and owned by Moi Webb could be a spring juvenile. Grace and Favour, by Philoctetes which has done well as a sire of broodmares, is a half-sis-ter to Wood Court Inn while Shy Rambler is a Blushing Groom stallion whose stock can be expected to make their mark this season, the oldest are now three-year-olds.

Pitman has four youngsters by the Vaguely Noble stallion, Euphronius, going through their paces. Euphronius, from the American Oaks winner Marshua, was a SUSI million yearling and his oldest stock are three.

A filly from Fireglow is closely related to Butternut the Moonee Valley Gold Cup winner, while another is a half-sister to Malak’s Star, a winner last season. There is also a filly from Fufas, the dam of the top galloper Indigod, and other winners. On lease from Akarana Stud is a half-sister, by Pikehall, to the brilliant race mare Ebony Belle. Pikehall is closely related to last season’s boom juvenile sire Pompei Court, and he is the sire of another filly from Akarana Stud in the stable out of Catherine Amanda whose dam is closely related to Torbek and Swell Deal.

An Icelandic filly leased from the north is a half-sister to the speedy Standelle, a winner from the Parsons stable in recent months, while a Malak El Hawa colt is from Lady Jay and is a half-brother to Castro as well as being closely related to Otehi Bay.

From Thornton Park Stud comes a Khairpour filly from Astral Mist whose second dam was the Oaks winner, Devante.

Khairpour is by Arctic Tern, a fine race horse, and the big hope to ensure the breeding line of the great race horse, Sea Bird, is maintained. Khairpour’s dam is a fullsister to Kalamoun a sensational sire success in Europe. Both were by another sensational stallion Zaddaan, whose son, Adraan, which died after one season, has broken several breeding records in Australia, one of them being his 19 good winners from the 22 live foals he left.

A Nuage D’Or filly from Rhine Goddess, bought at the recent Horses in Training Sale, has an interesting pedigree, the mare being by the crack English galloper, Rheingold, from Goldwyn Goddess, by the underrated Red God. Broadway Melody, a half-sister to Goldwyn Goddess, won the Princess Royal Stakes in England and left Broadway Dancer the best filly in France in 1974. Another half-sister to Goldwyn Goddess, Goldwyn Princess, left the Group One winner, and sire, African Song.

Nuage D’or is by Nijinsky, the wonder horse of 1970, and a brother to Golden Fleece, the best three-year-old in Europe in 1982 winning the Epsom Derby among other features. Two recent arrivals from Keith Gudsell in Tirau are youngsters by Novel Kingdom and there is a Savant colt from Shelley Rose and a Beechcraft youngster from My Charm, a half-sister to Cahir, a Kumara Gold Nuggets winner for the stable related to Joyarty and Myra May.
