Highview Boy runs slick Addington trial

Highview Boy, given the benefit of the doubt by officialdom after breaking and losing all chance before the start in a junior drivers’ event at Addington last Saturday, put that misdemeanor behind him with a slick winning run at the Addington trials yesterday.
A three-year-old colt by Jiffy Boy, Highview Boy shortened his odds for tomorrow’s Sydenham Mall Mobile Pace at the New Brighton Harness Racing Club’s meeting when he cruised over 2600 m from the mobile gate in 3:21.4 yesterday. In the hands of Henry Skinner, who trains the colt at Ryal Bush with Alan Devery, Highview Boy settled third of the four runners, but moved up to attack the leader with 1000 m to run.
Highview Boy was going easily for Skinner at the finish, the last 800 m taking 595. Tough Delivery battled on to get within three lengths of the youngster, with four lengths to Shesa Monti. Gina Rosa (40m), scratched from tomorrow’s New Brighton Cup after drawing wide, came from last to win the main pacers’ heat narrowly but well in 3:22.3 (stand). One of three Jack Smo-lenski-trained runners engaged, Gina Rosa was driven by Rodger Austin, who did not have the Plat du Jour mare extended to beat Venus Boy (20m),
which, also ran on purposefully from the back for trainer Wayne Ivey, by a nose. Smolensk! reined Charles Nero (10m) into a solid-finishing third, with Kotare Platinum (handy outer) and Willow Chip, which was not hurried from a midfield position, next.
Starwin Boy (40m), the third Smolensk! representative, handled by Jill Smolensk!, was giving the leaders 100 m on settling and did well to finish eighth, being timed over his last 2400 m in 3:2.4 and his closing 800 m in 59.6.
Swinging Billy, nearing racing trim, trotted keenly throughout the C2-C5 trotters’ heat and finished best from the third line to beat Game Trio, parked in the open, by half a length. He returned 3:31.4 for the 2600 m, the leaders quickening from the 800 m in 60.85.
Viewfield King, in spite of tangling early, trialed to the satisfaction of the stipendiary stewards with an impressive four-length win in a CO pace.
The Clever Innocence gelding, which was stood
down until he trials twice, after inconveniencing the majority of the field with a break on the first turn against the three-year-olds at Addington last Saturday, sprinted up sharply from the back at the 600 m and went on to score decisively in 3:27.1, the leaders quickening over their last 800 m in 60s and last 400 m in 295. Patronazo, fourth in the Lion Brown Three and Four-Year-Old Series Final at Hutt Park earlier this month, was another impressive maiden winner yesterday. The El Patron gelding trained at Weedons by Greg Hope, outfinished Star Quest by half a length in 3:28.5, the leaders running their last 800 m in 59.55.
Motu El, the runner-up to Fair Warning in fast time at the Ashburton trials last Thursday, fought on best in the CO trotters’ heat yesterday after being handy and for a time in the open. The Terry McMillan-trained El Patron mare returned a useful 3:32.6.
Mystery Fella (Swinging Fella—Sweet Mystery colt), one of three repre-
sentatives from Colin McLachlan’s Yaldhurst team, finished best from the third line to win the Two-Year-Old heat comfortably from Lucine (Alberton —Mimi filly), which trailed, in 2:45.8 for the 2000 m.
Chippie Eyre (Transport Chip-Wai Eyre colt), a stablemate of the winner, ran on for third, with the remainder beaten off 12 lengths away. Results:
