Youth Centre gets new name The former Christchurch Youth Centre stepped back more than 50 years in time to. find inspiration for a new name.

From 1935 until about 1985 the centre was actually a theatre. For some of that time it was called the Cinerama Picture Theatre — thus its new name, the Cinerama Youth Centre.

“Everybody knows what the cinerama is,” says its manager, Bridget Hanrahan. “When young people say they are going to the cinerama their parents will know where they are.” She says young people did not particularly like the name “Christchurch

Youth Centre.” It sounded too “institutionalised” or like a religious club, when the centre aims to be neutral territory.

“It was difficult to find a name that said what we were, was modern enough, and incorporated our objectives."

Along with the new name have come several other changes. Because numbers attending the regular fortnightly discos have dropped slightly, the centre will now hold only the occasional disco and concert for special occasions. However, from September 30, its cafe will be open every Friday night from 7 p.m. to 10.45 p.m. and there are also music videos and a juke box to listen to. Young people from about eight Christchurch

secondary schools are acting as go-betweens for the centre. They will be asking other pupils what type of entertainment they would like to see provided, and will keep schools infornled about what is coming! up at the centre. Youth Trek Canterbury Scouts plan to hold the annual “Spirit of Youth Trek” on October 29 this year. Anyone who wishes to help raise money for scouting in Canterbury can take part in the trek. Walkers will leave from the Burwood Plantation and Waikuku, meeting at the Blue Skies scout base in Kaiapoi. During the walk there will be a fair at Blue Skies, with stalls, games, food and fun for everyone.
