Postal strike ends
NZPA-AAP London The 12-day-old British postal strike, which crippled the nation’s mail services, ended yesterday with both sides claiming victory. The Post Office and the striking Union of Communication Workers forged a deal over recruitment bonuses and the use of casual staff which will lead to workers returning to their jobs today. The Post Office said that it would take about two weeks for the postal service to return to normal and to clear up a backlog of 150 million letters. Under yesterday’s agreement, the union will negotiate with management on a new system to replace the recruiting incentive and will allow the employment of casual labour to clear the backlog. F.
