Pomare Connell, Addington’s representative rugby league wing, has received a warning from the Canterbury board of control about his defensive methods. He appeared before the board at its weekly meeting to answer a charge that he made a late and dangerous tackle on a fellow Canterbury player, Gary Leek, during the Lion Red championship preliminary final on August 28. “He was warned about his manner of playing,” said the Canterbury

Earlier this season Connell was sent off. for a high and dangerous tackle of a Papanui player, Martin Hobbs: Connell was suspended for two club and two Canterbury matches. . Connell was also the central figure in an incident involving a Hornby

opponent, Vaughan Low, two weeks before his dismissal. Hornby officials tried without success to have Connell cited on video evidence. • Peter Brown, the New Zealand prop, will not play for his Te Atatu club in the Lion Red League Cup after being sent off for a high tackle in the Auckland grand final. But Brown’s 16-day suspension will, end on the eve of the first of two trials for the Kiwi World Cup final team, at Hamilton on September 29.
