League wing warned
Pomare Connell, Addington’s representative rugby league wing, has received a warning from the Canterbury board of control about his defensive methods. He appeared before the board at its weekly meeting to answer a charge that he made a late and dangerous tackle on a fellow Canterbury player, Gary Leek, during the Lion Red championship preliminary final on August 28. “He was warned about his manner of playing,” said the Canterbury
secretary-manager, Mannie Underwood, yesterday. No further action was taken because Connell had not been sent from the field — the incident occurred out of sight of referee and touch judges. Earlier this season Connell was sent off. for a high and dangerous tackle of a Papanui player, Martin Hobbs: Connell was suspended for two club and two Canterbury matches. . Connell was also the central figure in an incident involving a Hornby
opponent, Vaughan Low, two weeks before his dismissal. Hornby officials tried without success to have Connell cited on video evidence. • Peter Brown, the New Zealand prop, will not play for his Te Atatu club in the Lion Red League Cup after being sent off for a high tackle in the Auckland grand final. But Brown’s 16-day suspension will, end on the eve of the first of two trials for the Kiwi World Cup final team, at Hamilton on September 29.
