Purdah’s Pride will have to pull all stops for Guineas success

Special correspondent Wellington The excellent Manakau colt, Purdah’s Pride, gets a chance to extend his record even further when he tackles the $45,000 Okawa Paramount Hawke’s Bay Guineas at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting at Hastings this afternoon. Purdah’s Pride has already won the Wanganui Guineas this season and today he faces not only the three runners which finished immediately behind him, but also talented fresh blood in the form of Regal Echo, French Icing and Solaris Star.

Given the expected improvement from Come Racing and the appearance of Regal Echo, Purdah’s Pride is going to have to pull out all the stops. For all that he has impressed as a galloper of genuine class. His last three wins include the Shifnal Prince at Foxton and the Ryder Stakes late season before his Guineas triumph. Purdah’s Pride has won four times from just five races. Today he will strike a track that is likely to be firm. His first two runs were both on top of the ground and they brought a debut win at Trentham and then a fourth on the same course.

Come Racing was fourth in the Wanganui Guineas, behind Krona and Zebadee, but he was running out at the finish of the 1320 metres, which should stand to him as he tackles the 1400 metres this afternoon. The run was his first since a Brisbane success last season and he will be ridden by Grant Cooksley, who will attempt to complete the Cavan-agh-Guineas double. A son of Prince Echo, Regal Echo won three times from five starts last season, winning his first two at Ellerslie and then Trentham. He missed out. in the Sires’ Produce at Awapuni then third favourite, but then won at Paeroa, before chasing Espiare home in the Laurent at Ellerslie last May. He resumed with a second at Dargaville just on a month ago and with Greg Childs up he can be expected to improve. Krona ran a big race when second at Wanganui and there will be strong support for French Icing, the only filly in the field. She was second at Dargaville 10 days ago and won at Te Rapa last season.

Sir Jugular and Solaris Star were rivals here last Saturday in the Scannell 1200, finishing fourth and sixth respectively. Both have been winners this season, Sir Jugular at Gisborne and Solaris Star at Riccarton. Zebadee is the only maiden in the field, but he does have the Wanganui placing to back his chances. Flying Spray was sixth in the Wanganui Guineas, while The Phantom was a maiden winner here last month. Crown Symbol was the beaten favourite when fifth behind Monarch Prince in the

three-year-old feature at New Plymouth earlier in the month. The Guineas is the first leg of the T.A.B. double. The second will be run on the $lO,OOO Wishart Sprint (1200 m which features new campaigns for the likes of Lady Aloof, Auto Air, Sandboy, Amorous and Lucky Dip. Beach Tango, won here last season and Sound Belt, a last-start winner at Wanganui, is pretty seasoned, as are Rojimin and Fortune Road. Stylish Lass, back from weight-for-age racing, and Honour Bright, which faded after showing pace- early at Wanganui, could also play some role in the finish.

The $20,000 Herald Tribune (2000 m gives the Matamata galloper Tour Blade a chance to confirm a trip to Australia for next month’s Caulfield Cup. He was second at Wanganui 10 days ago and today he gets the chance to show his true worth on top of the ground. Exocet, Fairfield Lad, back to handicap conditions, Kimberley Road, a winner at Wanganui, and. Tilbury Docks are among the opposition which should keep Tour Blade right up to the mark this afternoon.
