Roy Purdon honoured
PA Auckland Roy Purdon was named New Zealand Racing Personality of the Year at the annual dinner of the Racing Writers’ Association on Sunday. The trophy, presented by Sir Robert Muldoon, was accepted by Barry Purdon on behalf of his father, who is overseas. The partnership of Roy and Barry Purdon, of Clevedon, has topped the
harness racing trainers’ premiership for the last 10 years. Roy Purdon won the three premierships back to the 1974-75 season. A citation accompanying the award said Roy Purdon had again enjoyed a remarkably successful season, with Luxury Liner winning three Group One races and Godfrey a fourth. “But it was not only his exceptional skills as a
horseman that earned him the esteem of the country’s racing writers, it was his unfailing courtesy and helpfulness — he was invariably the gentleman.” Roy Purdon and his wife, Margaret, are due home soon from a world trip. The other candidates for the title were Maurice McKendry, Dave O’Sullivan, Lance O’Sullivan and Peter Tims.
