KAY FORRESTER
The Christchurch Arts Centre will have an artist-in-residence from next year. Trust Bank Canterbury has sponsored an annual award for an artist to live in a flat and work in a studio provided at the Arts Centre. The flat and adjacent studio are in the old arts school, above the Jambalaya Restaurant. The position is for artists who do not live in Christchurch, in a bid to bring working artists into Christchurch to enrich the community. It will run for nine months each year for the next five years. The. to take up
will be a visual artist, whose term will begin in March next year. The artist will be selected by November. The annual award will be opened up to performing artists and other ar- : tists after the first year. The bank’s sponsorship covers renovation and rental of the studio and flat, and travel expenses for the artist, as well as material costs. The Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council will provide a monthly stipend for the artist’s term. The management committee overseeing the award includes representatives of the Arts
Council and the Arts Centre. The Robert McDougall Art Gallery t has promised the use of its Art Annex exhibition space for an exhibition by the artist. The artist-in-residence award also includes lectures and works on commission by the artist. Facilities at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury will also be provided. ' ' . The award grew from the criticism that artists were being excluded from the Arts Centre to make way for commercial development when apartin the centre’s buildings were proposed.
