Fishery meetings
By
OLIVER RIDDELL
in Wellington The Government is still some distance away from a final settlement of the Maori fishing claims. Meetings were held at Parliament yesterday between the Government, Maori representatives and the fishing industry. The Minister for StateOwned Enterprises, Mr Prebble, said the meetings were not designed to announce a final settlement They had been called to discuss the issues with industry members and to brief them on the negotiations between the Government and Maori representatives, he said. The two parties to the negotiations — the Crown and Maoridom — had made progress and the Government was bringing the fishing industry up to date. Mr Prebble said the Government had assured the fishing industry that it would listen to its views before final decisions were made. Yesterday’s had been another in the series of meetings beteen the Government and members of the industry since the joint working group on Maori fisheries had reported to the Government in early July.
