Two face trial for fraud
A man and woman will face trial by jury in the District Court on charges relating to an alleged fraud involving $20,000. The defendants were Brent James Burbery, aged 25 (Mr D. J. R. Holderness), and Tracey Teresa Knox, aged 25 (Mr C. N. Ruane). After a preliminary hearing in the District Court yesterday, Messrs J. B. Andersen and C. W. Crawford, Justices of the Peace, commmited the two for trial on a joing charge of conspiring together by deceit, falsehood, or fraudulent means about December 23 last year, to defraud the Westpac Banking Corporation of $20,000.
Burbery also was committed for trial on two other charges of using Westpac Banking Corporation savings account withdrawal vouchers for $4500 on December 23 and $lO,OOO on December 24, to obtain a financial advantage.
Knox also was committed for trial on charges of using a Westpac Banking Corporation savings deposit voucher for $20,000, and a Bank of New Zealand cheque for $20,000. both on December 23, with intent to defraud, to obtain a financial advantage.
The two were remanded on bail pending a date for their trial.
