Bank teller appears on charge of stealing
Interim suppression of name was granted to a bank teller, charged with stealing $16,200 from his employer, when he appeared before Judge Hattaway in the District Court yesterday. The accused, aged 18, was remanded, without plea, to September 20. He is accused of stealing $lO,OOO, $4200, and $2OOO during August. A duty solicitor told the Judge that the remand was to enable the accused, at present suspended by the bank, to make compensation. She said a large amount had already been repaid. A further application seeking suppression of the details of the alleged offending was refused by the Judge, who said it had been with some reluctance that he had granted interim suppression of the name of the accused. RUGBY JERSEYS Interim suppression of name was. granted to a man, aged 28, charged
with stealing 200 rugby jerseys, valued at $BOOO. Police allege the jerseys, the property of Canterbury International, Ltd, were stolen between September, 1986, and September 2, this year. The defendant was remanded to September 20. ROBBERY CHARGE A third man charged in connection with the aggravated robbery of Trust Bank Ham on September 5 was remanded in custody for a week. Eru Lucien Hall, aged 37, unemployed, is charged with Daniel Kotua Wehi and Tamati William Grey that being armed with a firearm they robbed the bank’s tellers of $14,412 in cash. Grey, aged. 23, unemployed, represented by Mr W. J; Appleby, has been remanded in custody to December 13 for the taking of depositions. HOMEBAKE LAB No explanation was offered by a man on whose Cranmer Square property police found a
“homebake” morphine laboratory, said Sergeant W. P. Cleasey. Michael John Brasell, aged 22, unemployed, admitted knowingly permitting his premises to be used for the manufacture of morphine on September 5. He was convicted and remanded to October 3 for sentence. Sergeant Creasey said when police and Customs officers, executed a search warrant at the defendant’s address they found the defendant, and an associate, in the kitchen. A homebake laboratory was in use at the time, said the sergeant. ESCAPING CHARGE A man facing a charge of escaping from a penal instituion was involved in a brief but violent struggle when he attempted to race out of the No. 1 courtroom on his way out of the dock into the cells. Shane Terence Fox,
aged 21, a tattooist, was caught and held by three policemen as he kicked and lashed out with his fists. He also faces two charges of unlawfully taking cars on September 11 and 12. Fox tried to escape after being remanded in custody to September 20 on these charges. The defendant appeared later in the day on a charge of attempting to escape from the custody of a police officer. He was remanded in custody for a week. His hands were handcuffed behind his back. BURGLARY CHARGE Bail was not opposed by police, but a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. residential curfew was imposed on a man charged with breaking and entering the Ham Pharmacy about August 30. Hemi Taylor Lewis, aged 20, a freezing worker, was remanded on bail to September 20.
ARSON CHARGE After a hearing in chambers, a man, aged 42, accused of wilfully setting fire to a shed in Gresford Street was remanded on bail to September 19. . The accused, represented by Mr M. J. Glue, was granted interim suppression of his name. He is charged with committing the offence on Monday. (Before Judge Bisphan) EXTRADITION A man wanted in Australia for alleged cocaine dealing is to be extradited to New South Wales today to face these charges. After a hearing yesterday afternoon, John Brent Williams, aged 38, unemployed (Mr P. H. B. Hall), was remanded in custody pending his deportation. Until the hearing yesterday, Williams had been granted bail and was residing with a friend at Waimate. His passport had been surrendered to the court.
