One North Island businessman must rue the day he came south on business. He got an early start to the day in June, heading from Christchurch to Timaru in a rental car. 8.45 a.m.: He was stopped at
Chertsey by a Ministry of Transport officer using a Hawk radar. The 139km/h on the radar cost him $2OO in instant fines and 35 demerit points. 9.15 a.m.: He was stopped at Winslow by another officer with another Hawk. 139km/h.
$2OO fine. 35 demerit points. 9.57 a.m.: Stopped at Seadown. Another officer. Another Hawk. 129km/h. Another $l6O. Another 35 demerit points. Total for the day: $560 in fines and 105 demerit points. One hundred demerits within a year automatically puts a driver off the road for
six months. , : The businessman clocked up his demerits in 72 minutes. Senior-Sergeant Jim Drain; of the Christchurch M.0.T., gave the details of the business trip last evening as a warning to other businessmen
in a hurry.
