Kurds flee to Iran after ‘chemical attacks’
NZPA-Reuter Nicosia More than 16,000 Kurds have fled from “extensive chemical attacks” in northern Iraq to Iran, the Iranian news agency, IRNA, reported. It quoted an official
in East Azerbaijan province as saying more than 7000 had taken refuge in the last two weeks, joining 9200 who earlier sought asylum. Some 60,000 Kurds, accusing Iraq of chemical attacks, have sought
refuge in Turkey since Bagdad launched a big offensive against them in mid-July. The United States says it is convinced chemical weapons were used, despite repeated Iraqi denials.
