Heritage subject of meeting

A public meeting on New Zealand’s “vanishing heritage” will be held at the Canterbury Public Library on Wednesday, at 8 p.m. It is being organised by the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society and the Conservation Department. The meeting was to

focus public attention on the plight of New Zealand’s threatened plant and animals, “our vanishing heritage” said the director of the Forest and Bird Protection Society, Dr Gerry McSweeney. Budget cuts to research and, rescue programmes for kiwis, kakapo and

kokako, continued bush clearance and a reduction in predator control programmes were jeopardising New Zealand’s international conservation reputation, he said. The Forest and Bird Society was using the review of resource management and protected area

laws to seek better legal protection for threatened species and their habitats. The society was also half-way towards it fundraising target of $lOO,OOO to help publicise New Zealand’s endangered species and fund a range of rescue programmes, said Dr McSweeney. ,
