Riding ban sought
PA Auckland. Hart has asked Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Marshall, and New Zealand Racing Conference president, Jim Bull, to persuade the jockey, Bobby Vance, not to ride in South Africa later this month. Vance, presently in Hong Kong, plans to go to South Africa on September 24. The Halt All,, Racist Tours group has asked the Racing Conference to impose a riding ban on Vance for life if he goes to South Africa. Racing Conference chief executive officer, Haff Poland, said the conference had no policy on jockeys , riding in South Africa.
“We don’t consider it our prerogative to inhibit jockeys from riding where they like throughout the world.” Hart spokesman, John Minto, said there were no New Zealand jockeys listed on the United Nations “boycott breakers” register.
Positive action from the Government and the Racing Conference would keep it that way, he said.
Minto said the Government refused to act/ earlier this year to recall rugby player, Marty Berry, from playing in South Africa.
