The facts behind the week
“Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week” is held each year, between the first two Saturdays in October. It is a time when local authorities and “Keep New Zealand Beautiful” programmes, like the “Keep Christchurch Beautiful” campaign, endeavour to focus public attention on the need to keep our environment attrac-
tive and litter-free. One means of achieving this end is to involve the community in cleaning up and beautifying its surroundings, and to try and teach people to keep the city litter-free. To encourage young people to take pride in their city, the “Keep Christchurch Beautiful” campaign has made avail-
able an award, the Christchurch Clean and Beautiful Youth Award, which is presented each year to the youth group which undertakes the most meritorious community service project during “Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week.”
All competing groups receive Certificates of Appreciation in recognition of their efforts.
