Cameron Smith Pharmacy moves

Cameron Smith Pharmacy has moved from the corner of Cathedral Square to the new N.Z.I. Life building at 96 Hereford Street close to the Shades Arcade. The move from the prominent Cathedral Square site is a break for the owner, Mr Neil Foster, and it marks a change to a long-established part of the city scene, dating back to last century. The pharmacy was established by a Mr Skog. His fame was celebrated in a cartoon and rhyme which appeared in a newspaper in 1906. “If ever your liver should clog, Just mention the matter to Skog, Who says ‘Here you are,’ Takes a thing from a jar, And happy away you will jog,” runs the limerick.

The pharmacy opened in premises near the

Theatre Royal and finally moved to the corner of Worcester Street and Cathedral Square in 1920. In 1959, Mr L. N. Hudson bought it from Mrs Cameron Smith who had retained it after her husband’s death. Then in 1970 Neil Foster went into partnership with Mr Hudson, who retired in 1984. Mr Foster’s association with his landlord, Kerridge Odeon, ended when it was taken over by Pacer Pacific who refused to renew the lease. The move has given Neil Foster the chance to move into attractive new premises with new shop fittings. The shop has been tastefully decorated with blue/grey carpet with a subtle dark fleck that is complemented by peach and apricot tonings with gold trim for the walls.

Stands in antique white and peach with glass shelves display the products to best advantage. Fluorescent lighting panels and spot lights make the pharmacy a pleasant place to be in.

The same high standard of service is offered in the new pharmacy from Kim Lischner, the pharmacist who runs the dispensary, and the cosmeticians, Joanne Donnelly, who advises on the Shiseido range, Susan Lawson on Lancome and Elizabeth Arden, Leigh Drayton on Revlon, and Ngaire Watkins. The pharmacy stocks a big range of men’s toiletries, Kodak products, and French perfumes, as well as developing and printing photographs and prescriptions.
