Harewood, Chch set pace in inter-club golf
By
BOB SCHUMACHER
Neither Harewood nor Christchurch faltered as the Woodward Cup inter-club golf competition moved past the half-way mark with two rounds at Rangiora yesterday. Both teams have the maximum five points and, if Harewood can beat off Waitikiri’s challenge in the sixth round at Waimairi Beach on September 25, its meeting that afternoon with the champion, Christchurch, should prove the showdown of the series.
Waitikiri, champion in 1985 and 1986, is also unbeaten, but a draw against Russley yesterday morning was its second and it has fallen slightly adrift of the pacemakers.
Apart from Harewood and Christchurch, the biggest advance yesterday came from Waimairi Beach which had been without a point before the fourth round. It overwhelmed Avondale in the morning and was no less sympathetic to Russley in the afternoon. The two wins lifted the seasiders to sixth in the competition. North Canterbury retained its unbeaten record against Central Canterbury in the Woodward Cup since the two teams were admitted in 1980, taking a 5-3 victory on a home venue.
Harewood, however, was under considerable pressure to show its early form was no fluke. Its opponents yesterday, Templeton and Central Canterbury, had both lowered Harewood the previous year.
For a good while it appeared that Templeton might record its fourth successive win over Harewood. The lower order results worked out square after Harewood held an early 3-1 advantage. But Roy McLauchlan won the sixteenth against Harewood’s lan Walsh to get a half and the junior, Andrew Hobbs, birdied the final hole to snatch a half against the Harewood No. 6, Brent Street. If Brent Street could only get a half, his brothers, Mark and Stephen, in the top positions, went one better. They were behind early against Ross Jones and Joe Gantley, respectively, but produced
withering finishes, especially Mark Street.
Jones had every reason to feel shell-shocked at the end. He was one-under par for the testing Rangiora course, but lost at the sixteenth as Street, devilishly difficult to beat when the mood takes him, reeled off an eagle and three birdies in their last five holes.
Stephen Street also played better when it mattered against his brother-in-law, Gantley. With Hugh McLeod a decisive winner against Alister McCall, Templeton salvaged just one win in the top order, Andrew Bishop accounting for a struggling Kerry Lake. In the afternoon, Harewood trailed Central Canterbury, 314-414, after six holes, but the swing had taken place by the twelfth, with Harewood ahead 5-3. With the three Street brothers all winning, McLeod and Peter Maclachlan overcoming bad starts, and Alister Sidford pulling away in the middle, Harewood eventually cruised home.
Christchurch scored an emphatic win against Coringa in the morning, and in a close contest between Canterbury’s two top-ranked players, John Williamson, the No. 2, overcame the No. 1, Brent Paterson (Coringa), at the last. Christchurch’s top five players completed double wins as the titleholder annihilated the bot-tom-placed Avondale in the fifth round. One of the best individual recoveries came from the Waitikiri No. 1, Tony Christie, against a fellow junior, Karl Mariu (North Canterbury). Mariu, a runaway winner of the Rangiora open recently, had Christie covered all the way, or so it seemed. Mariu, 3 up with three holes to play, lost them all, to a birdie, par, birdie finish. With Warwick Sherwood and Matthew Brownlee both winning the final hole against their North Canterbury opponents, Waitikiri’s win assumed flattering proportions.
