Easy ski win for pupil
Aaron McLean, a high school pupil, aged 15, of Queenstown, was a comfortable winner of the boys’ J2 (14 and 15 years) section when the Head-Holiday Inn South Island junior ski-ing championships ended at Coronet Peak, Queenstown, yesterday. Darkening skies, snow and a gusty north-west wind marred the final race, a slalom, set on the Greengates run. Firm, well-groomed early morning snow deteriorated along with the weather, leaving soft snow for the afternoon’s second run. Belinda Wallace, like McLean a member of the Wakatipu Ski Club, won the the girls’ J2 slalom and combined and 'Julian White (Oamaru), though only third in the slalom, won the J 3 boys combined. The Wilson Neill trophy was retained by Wakatipu for the sixth year in a row. Wakatipu finished with 336 points, well ahead of Mount
Hutt (206) and the Southland Ski Club (70).
