Canty veteran collects six N.Z. table tennis titles

Thelma. May, of Canterbury, won six titles in the New Zealand table tennis championships at Auckland last week.
Many won the . over-55 women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles; the over-45 singles and doubles; and the over-35 doubles. She was also runner-up to Canterbury’s Pam Shadbolt in the over-35 women’s singles and with Wellington’s John Lelliot was runner-up to Alan Tomlinson and Barbara Jackson (Auckland) in the over-55 mixed doubles. Shadbolt was her partner in the over-35 doubles; Jackson partnered her in the over-45 doubles.
Earlier in the week May scored an upset win over the nationally third-ranked Maxine Goldie in the team competition. Shadbolt beat the fifth seed, Sharon Coad (Auckland) to reach the open women’s singles quarterfinals, where she lost to the former Westport junior, Gol-' die (Hutt Valley), 21-17, 2123, 17-21, 16-21. Goldie beat the second seed, Christine Little (Auckland) in her semifinal before succumbing to the awesome speed and power of the 1987 tffiampioh,
Li Chun Li (Manawatu). John Baxter, of Canterbury, beat the New Zealand under--15 boys’ champion, P. Bowman (Auckland), in the first round of the open men’s singles and took the Auckland representative, Tony Radford, to five sets in the second round. The South Island veteran women women’s representative, Lynley Barker (Canterbury), teamed with Hone Ridley to beat Les Stewart and Pam Shadbolt (both Canterbury) in the final of the over--35 mixed doubles. Stewart teamed with Martin Duffy (Otago) <to reach the semi-finals of the over-35 doubles, losing to Barry Wynks (Hutt Valley) and Peter Root (North Shore). Glenn Haszard teamed with the surprise winner df the over-35 men’s singles, David Chow (Hutt Valley), to reach the semi-finals of the over-35 doubles, losing to the eventual winners, Nam Lee and D. Bevan (Auckland). David Johnson, of Canterbury, caused an upset in the B-section singles when he beat the South Island Open singles champion, Wayne Adamson (Hamilton), in straight sets. A Canterbury representative, Kevin Duffy, lost to R.
Kerr (Wellington), 20-22, 1421 in the final of the open men’s plate. Barker was the runner-up in the open women’s bracelet, losing to J. Reed (North Shore) in straight sets. Another Canterbury runner-up was Stewart, who lost to W. Gear (Wellington) in the final of the Bsection men’s plate, 21-7, 1921, 18-21. Championship results.— Open — men’s singles: B. Lelliot (H.V.) beat D. Wong (Auckland). Doubles: R. Gregory (Waitemata) and Lelliot beat C. Wong (Auckland) and D. Wong. Mixed doubles: Lelliot and May beat L Rau and M. Rau (Counties).
Over-55 women’s singles: May beat N. Brant (Counties). Doubles: May and Rau beat D. Lassen (Auckland) and B. (Waitemata).
Over-45 men’s singles: W. Evans (H.V.) beat A. Tomlinson (Auckland). Doubles: R. Dunn and D. Wong (Auckland) beat D. Kalin (Canterbury) and Lelliot. Mixed doubles: Tomlinson and B. Jackson beat Lelliot and May. Women’s doubles: May and Jackson beat P. Hoete (Counties) and J. Stead (Canterbury).
Over-35 men’s singles: D. Chow (H.V.) beat H. Ridley (Auckland). Doubles: Bevan and Nam Lee beat B. Wynks and P. Root. Women’s singles: Shadboit beat May. Women’s doubles: Shadbolt and May beat V. Beaver (Counties) and C. Cunningham (Waitemata). Mixed doubles: H. Ridley and L. Barker beat L. Stewart and P. Shadbolt.
Under 21 men’s singles: J. Perry (Australia) beat P. Bowman (Auckland). Doubles: H. Bower (Auckland) and J. Perry (Australia) beat D. Sears (H.V.) and A. Winbom (Auckland). Women’s singles: E. Hoete (Counties) beat D. White (H.V.). Women’s doubles: D. White and M. White (H.V.) beat V. Balfour (Manawatu) and T. McAuinue (North Shore). Mixed doubles: G. Traill (Otago) and M. Goldie (H.V.) bedt M. Burns (North Sljpre) and E. Hoete.
