Solidarity appeals to Govt
NZPA-Reuter Gdansk Solidarity has given Lech Walesa _ a strong mandate to negotiate with Poland’s Communist rulers and urge them to create the right conditions for talks on the future of the banned union and the nation.
Mr Walesa spent 10 hours on Saturday with 40 members of the union’s regional and national leadership discussing tactics for “round table” talks called by the Government. He had further consul-
tations yesterday with up to 60 intellectuals and advisers on proposals for economic and political reform to be considered at the talks.
The Solidarity leaders on Saturday called on authorities to reaffirm clearly their offer to
consider restoring the union’s legality, to halt “poisonous propaganda” and to end repressive measures against workers involved in recent strikes. “A feeling of responsibility demands from all the creation of the right
conditions and atmosphere for talks aimed at solving the basic problems of Poland,” the Solidarity leaders said. “Lech Walesa has the support of the National Executive Commission and the regional strike committees in the talks.”
