Workers told more jobs on line

By

SUZANNE KEEN

The management of Henry Berry Wholesalers is remaining silent about redundancies announced at the company’s Christchurch store last week. One of the staff members laid off said yesterday that workers who remained at the store had

been warned by the management that they faced immediate dismissal if they spoke to the news media about the job losses. The man, who did not want to be named, said that four office staff and four store workers had been given notice last Friday. It was possible another

worker would be maoe redundant today. The restructuring of the company was given as the reason for the lay-offs. The manager of the Christchurch store, Mr David Kininmonth, would not comment on the redundancies.

A spokesman for Henry Berry in Auckland, Mr Stephen Preston, confirmed there had been “some redundancies.” The assistant secretary of the Southern Distribution Workers’ Union, Mr Dave Dickison, said he had no knowledge of the redundancies.
