Crosses on trees mystify resident

The appearance of yellow crosses on about 80 trees in Fitzgerald Avenue has a local resident mystified. Mr Mark Muir, who lives in Armagh Street, approached “The Press” about the crosses on trees between Kilmore Street and Worcester Street, concerned that they may be part of some Christchurch City Council plan that he had not heard about. The council’s deputy general manager (parks), Mr Rob Dally, said the crosses could either be

the work of pranksters or part of the council’s work to develop extra turning lanes by reducing the width of median strips. Mr Muir said the crosses were mainly on silver birch trees more than 10m high. The large number of crosses seemed to indicate that the marks were unrelated to council work, Mr Dally said. He believed the council would remove a small number of trees but these would be replaced, as had been done in Linwood Avenue.
