Kiwis lose final
PA Suva Australia grabbed the Oceania under 20 soccer gold medal with a composed 1-0 win over New Zealand at the National Stadium yesterday. The elusive Australian midfielder, Zoran Hie, was put clear by the right wing, Stefan Jee, after 26 minutes. He squeezed past Andrew Brown and fired home the only goal of the match beating the New Zealand keeper, Dave Harris. The New Zealand youth team coach, Terry Conley, was unperturbed by the defeat “It was a good effort. Psychologically my players know that we didn’t field six of our best players who were used in the semifinal.
“That I’d say was our strongest line-up and to lose by a single goal is not bad.” Australia dominated play from the outset with its cohesiveness and good build-ups. It had 16 shots at goals to New Zealand’s seven.
Mr Conley was particularly pleased with the performance of Steve Toohey, Shane Knowles and striker Kenny Harlock.
The Chinese put Fiji’s position in Oceania soccer into perspective with a 2-0 bronze medal play-ojf win.
