Shares ended an erratic week above their lows in London on Friday with the gains early in the trading period giving way to nervousness about higher interest rates and inflation.

Two rights issues this week also dented sentiment. A £I3OM rights issue from Ultramar on Thursday and a £363M cash call from Carlton Communications on Friday made the market wary that other firms might come to the market for funds ahead of the British Steel float later this year.
