Sword wounds performer

PA Auckland A sword slipped during a circus performance on Thursday, the point striking the chest of veteran performer Mr Clive Harrison. He was balancing a skg sword on the point of a dagger, held in his mouth during his Whirling Brothers act, when it slipped and struck a bone in his chest. “I was a bit lucky,” he said. “It hurt a bit. I was worried that it would go into my throat or eyes.” The performer, aged 58, continued his act before dressing ”he wound.

Mr Harrison’s sister, Ella, was in the ring at Heritage Park when the accident happened. “There was a stunned silence. A lot of people in the audience may have thought it was part of the act,” she said. The pair, who perform a trapeze act under the stage name, The Flying Lotas, have been with circuses for nearly 30 years. The sword-balancng act has been part of Mr Harrison’s repertoire since 1964. “This is the first time I have had an accident. My reactions must be slowing,” he said.
