Destroyer in Gulf collision

NZPA-Reuter Dubai Eleven British sailors were injured when the destroyer Southampton collided with a merchant ship it was escorting into the Gulf, the Royal Navy said yesterday. A Navy spokesman said an investigation would be launched into the collision, which holed the warship and the 34,477-tonne British container vessel Tor Bay on Saturday night 16km off the coast of Oman outside the Strait of Hormuz. The spokesman told Reuters the 3560-tonne Southampton, carrying a crew of 280, would put into the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates for the damage to be inspected. It was holed in the port side. The bows collided and shipping sources said the ships probably hit while manoeuvring into position for the destroyer to lead the Tor Bay through the narrow strait into the Gulf.
