Ideal ski-ing conditions
Sunshine, ideal race conditions and a special camaraderie greeted the 25 women and 70 men competing in the 1988 Shotover Resort Ski Masters at Coronet Peak on Saturday. Racers taking on the tworun 17-gate giant slalom course ranged upwards from the qualifying age of 30 to the sprightly late 70s. The over-all winners of the New Zealand Ski Masters rosebowl trophies were Chris Womersley, of Methven, and Carol Marie (nee Lowry), of Hawke’s Bay. This was calculated on a complicated handicap formula which normally favours the older skiers. Womersley, aged 39, a
double New Zealand Olympic representative, skied superbly to take the men’s competition. As well as the trophies he and Marie also won a day’s heli ski-ing. Another former national champion, Murray Gardner, a North Canterbury farmer with some years on Womersley, showed good form too with one run less than 1.5 s slower.
