Hayes squash champion

Rod Hayes (Christchurch) and Justine Marriott (Sumner) are the Canterbury A grade closed squash champions for 1988. In the finals of the reinstituted Canterbury closed championships at the Christchurch club courts yesterday, Hayes had little trouble disposing of a half-hearted Paul Viggers, 9-5, 9-6, 9-1. The women’s A grade title was decided in a round-robin series and Marriott beat all three of her rivals, Carolyn Oakley, Freda Walker and Philippa Beams. The Sumner player was especially severe on Oakley, winning that contest, 9-0, 9-6, 9-0, while dropping one game in each of the others. Beams, still a junior, had collected good wins over Marriott and Oakley in a Canterbury selection tournament a few weeks ago but succumbed to them both this time. In the men’s B grade final, Tristan Franklin was far too good for his opponent, Wayne Seebeck, winning in straight games, but Leonie Ward had a tougher match with Karen Williams in the women’s section. Next year it is planned to

hold the closed tournament about a month earlier in
