Bhutan comparison
Sir,—To say (August 22) that the culture of Bhutan is similar to New Zealand is naive. Bhutan and New Zealand do have many similarities in terms of climate and geography; they also have similar education systems and an agricultural economy. But the cultural influence of Bhutan comes mainly from the Buddhism of Tibet and India. Bhutan has never been colonised by any European Power. The people of Bhutan seek to develop their country with the help of foreign technologies. At the same time they seek to preserve and develop their own unique culture. The chance to live, learn and work in such a unique country is a major reason why people seek to become involved in organisations such as Volunteer Service Abroad. —Yours, etc., JOHN BRUNSDEN. August 22, 1988.
