Indecent assault leads to jail
PA Rotorua A man, aged 66, was jailed for nine months for indecent assault when he appeared before Judge Gilbert in the District Court at Rotorua. He had admitted the charge. Judge Gilbert said the complainant was 13 yearsold at the time of the assault. He said the Court of Appeal did not look favourably on defendants
who used their position within a family for this sort of offence, and cited a May, 1987, Court of Appeal judgment which said the penalties should be heavy enough “to mark society’s concern” at child abuse. An application for final name suppression of the defendant was granted by Judge Gilbert, who said publication of the name could lead to the identification of the complainant.
