Burglar used knife

Five hours surgery was required on a man whose left forearm was cut to the bone after being slashed with a slaughterman’s knife wielded by a man who broke into his home on July 17, said Sergeant W. C. Creasey in the District Court yesterday.-

Richard Pirimona, aged 22, unemployed (Mr M. J. Knowles), admitted that after breaking into a house in McCarthy Street, and while inside he used the knife as a weapon; robbed Raymond Max Tepuke of a video recorder, a radio cassette player, a painting, five bottles of spirits, $BO in cash, and a knife, and at the time of such robbery caused grievous bodily harm to Mr Te Puke. Pirimona was convicted by Judge Hay and committed in custody to the High Court for sentence next month. On charges of breaking and entering a house in Burwood Road on May 24, and stealing $3OO from a flat in Olivers Road on May 10, Judge Hay entered convictions but declined jurisdiction. Pirimona was sent to the High Court for sentence on the same day that he is sentenced on the aggravated offences. Sergeant Creasey said the defendant broke into Mr Te Puke’s home at 3 a.m. on July 17 by forcing a window. Once inside, he gathered items which he carried outside to a car in the driveway. Back inside the house he picked up a slaughterman’s knife and using a flashlight walked along to a bedroom where Mr Te Puke, awakended by the flashlight, called out. He threw the bed-

clothes over the defendant. The defendant lashed out with the knife. As a result, Mr Te Puke received severe knife wounds to his left armpit and forearm, which bled profusely. Pirimona ordered the complainant to lie on the bed, obtained his wallet, and removed some money. He told the bleeding man that he wanted the keys to his car. Failing to start the vehicle, he went back inside the house and obtained instructions from the complainant, said Sergeant Creasey. The car was later located, but with the radio removed. As a result of the attack, Mr Te Puke was in hospital for five days. On May 10, Pirimona went to his sister’s flat in Olivers Road. She was not home and an eldery female neighbour invited him in to her flat to wait. While accepting her hospitality, Pirimona stole $3OO of her savings. This was not discovered until much later. Compensation of this sum was sought, said Sergeant Creasey. Pirimona and an associate, broke into a house in Burwood Road, on May 24, from where they stole jewellery worth $2lOO. Sergeant Creasey said that after being apprehended, the defendant assisted in the recovery of some of the stolen property. Jewellery to a value of $530 had not been recovered. Compensation for this amount was sought. INJURY. OFFENCE A flat-mate suffered muscle and tissue damage as a result of being acci-

dentally shot by Keith George Ayres, said Sergeant Max South. Ayres, aged 20, a process worker (Mr W. Rosenberg), . admitted causing bodily injury to Miles Jonathon Jenkins by carelessly using a Chinese AK47 semi-automatic rifle on August 1. Sergeant South said that before the incident, in their Lincoln Road flat, the two men had consumed a 20-ounce bottle of rum.

In convicting the defendant and imposing a fine of $4OO, the Judge said the accident showed how vigilant people had to be when handling firearms. CHARGE.
