Centre size to be extended?
The Canterbury Promotion Council cannot afford to pay the quadruple rent for the extra room it needs at its Information Centre in Worcester Street. The centre has to be enlarged because more customers were using it, said the Promotion Council’s chief executive, Mr Bruce Dunstan. In each of the last three months the record has been broken for the number of people using the centre. The customer total for the year ended July 31 was a record 143,159. Mr Dunstan said a proposal was before the Christchurch City Council, which owns the building, to double the size of the centre. But the proposal’s
success depended on the cost. The Promotion Council now works from two buildings. Its Information Centre is based at the old municipal building while other staff work from the Harley building. Mr Dunstan said it was important that the Promotion Council be housed under one roof. "We need to provide a bigger and better service for the increasing numbers of people using us,” he said. Mr Dunstan said the Promotion Council was preparing its case to present to the City Council, but it would be in trouble if its proposals were unsuccessful.
