Telecom cuts more jobs
The loss of another 28 jobs was announced by Telecom Christchurch yesterday. Telecom’s district manager, Mr Brian Finn, said Rangiora external plant depot staff would be cut by 12, records and general services staff by six, and the Ham technical training team by 10. Faults and installation personnel at Waiau and Hanmer Springs would be controlled from Rangiora, bringing the Rangiora staff to 44. Telecommunications deregulation and changed staff training needs had brought the cuts at Ham, he said. The section chairman of the Post Office Union,
Mr Phil Yarrall, said he could not comment on the cuts last evening because he had no details. Further cuts in the rural network for technicians were expected to be announced today, he said. Plans to change over to a district accounting scheme (D.A.S.) had been further delayed. The new scheme would handle accounts. A tentative date had been set for December but he expected a likely change to be in March next year. Telecom Christchurch had been due to change to D.A.S. at the end of * August. The centre would cover accounts for Christchurch, the West Coast and Nelson.
